Powder Springs

Nueva York

Located in one of Atlanta's loveliest neighborhoods, it's an old hotel so forget anything "fancy," but that's part of the charm of this historic inn. Call it outdated, but it's unmistakably clean, warm and affordable.

For a unique hotel experience a bit off the beaten path, there’s no place better than the Highland Inn. Established in 1927, this boutique hotel is quaint, convenient, and affordable, yet still located in heart of the Poncey-Highlands neighborhood, one of the liveliest parts of the city. The hotel offers free WiFi, free parking (on a first come, first served basis), complimentary continental breakfast, and pets are welcome for only a $10 upcharge. And with the regular lineup of variety shows, literature readings, concerts, and film screenings held in the building’s basement, better known as The Highland Ballroom, and Manuel’s Tavern just 2 blocks away, you’ll be sleeping in the center of it all.

Very quaint inn....and one of the largest inn's I've ever stayed at! Conveniently located near coffee shops. Clean rooms and not far at all from downtown ATL.

The Highland Inn is an old and quaint hotel off of North Highland. It's clear the inn has been here for a long time while the area around it has turned into a major area for boutique shopping, dining and eclectic art with Ponce de Leon and the Little Five Points area nearby.

The inn itself is pretty clean for such an old property. The room I saw was a double and had a sort of unusual set up with a wall separating the two beds. A tv was placed sort of randomly on a mini fridge in the room and there is a sink in the room area. The bathroom can be reached from either side of the room but it's incredibly small -- think a closet. Also, the bathroom shower was pretty old, not dirty just really old. There's a breakfast room and the hotel staff here was really nice. It's definitely a unique spot to stay and could be a good option for this looking to have a less traditional hotel stay.

Make no mistake, this is a very old hotel that comes with very few modern amenities. But the thing is, the Highland Inn has done a lot to turn the old building into something really neat and unique in Atlanta, boasting that they’re the only ‘European boutique hotel’ in the city. It’s a neat novelty, and very fun choice if you’re looking to try something a little different.

When you enter the hotel, you’re greeted by a classic style front desk, with room keys on chains sitting in boxes. The building and the rooms are old, but maintained well enough and with a lot of charm. The biggest problem is that the room was incredibly small – even two people might feel a little cramped in a room at the Highland Inn.

Something I’m not so sure about are the air conditioner units – they appeared to be small window units in the rooms. I visited during the fall, and the temperature was very mild and nice; but I’m thinking that during a hot summer it might be a real problem.

A neat perk is the built in cafe, which seems to be a popular spot even for people who are not staying at the hotel. There’s also a free breakfast, and free wifi. I very much enjoyed my visit.

From the outside of The Highland Inn I was very excited to see what was in store. The classic 1920’s design is charming from the outside and I was expecting the fun and kitschy vibe that the surrounding Virginia-Highlands area typically has to offer. The staff here is friendly, and one of my favorite features is that they still use actual keys for the guest rooms. This allows the imagination freely roam back in time a bit with the surroundings. Inside the Inn the rooms are less than satisfactory. The furniture is dated and doesn’t match the time period of the inn, the bathrooms are small and seem a little dirty, and the carpets are stained. With a little love this could be transformed into a great old world destination. Currently, the ballroom and spa are under separate ownership. The VA-HI area is a lot of fun and has easy access to downtown.
