Fancy french restaurant at Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Good place and god food, only difficult for a person that has English ESL to get every detail on the menu.

L'Espalier is consistently on the Best of Boston list and I believe they have a James Beard Award as well. Located in the Back Bay, it's really easy to walk here whether you're shopping at Copley or going to the Symphony.

You enter from the street level and then take an elevator up to the dining room. The meal I had here was great, beautifully presented and very delicate in the flavors. Our waiter made some great wine recommendations to pair with our meal. The dessert was good, but I would put the entrees a notch above the desserts. The air in the dining room is a teensy bit formal for my taste (as these places are prone to be), but not excessively so. You have a great vantage point from the dining room so you can see all the streets in the heart of Boston around you.

As I am sure the manager is reading this right now, I just wanted to say that the service was definitely 4+ stars. I felt that the waiter was exceptionally knowledgeable and was pleasantly surprised by the hospitality of the manager after the meal. He mentioned that he was excited to see me since I made a reservation on opentable 2 months in advance to my trip and I was happy that they even noticed!

So why 3 stars?

Their autumn menu was $89 per person for a 3 course meal, with tax and tip here and there. We got two cocktails but they were ... ok. I think that's what really pushed it. The cocktails were not as good as I thought they were and as you probably guessed they were in the $15 range.

The food was ok. I liked that when we came in they greeted us with multiple complimentary "bites" from the chef, but the bagel salmon spread thing was a little hallow and salty for me with a slight hint of salmon when it was described to me as something that would have had the salmon flavor much stronger than it did.

The foie gras was overcooked, only the center was the soft, butter foie gras you are normally used to, the sides tasted like liver (you know when you over cook liver it becomes paste-y tasting ...)

The fig bread was delicious so definitely a winner there. But you don't really come to a place like this to stuff yourself with the complimentary bread because ... well the food is supposed to wow.

I ordered the lamb, and it came with two little wedges of brie which just horribly clashed with the lamb, which was ... decently cooked, I suppose. The outer layer was extremely salty but none of it made it into the middle. Or I think it was lamb, but to not be able to tell what kind of meat it was ... that's a little off for me.

My date had the lobster salad and some fish which was far better than my dishes, so perhaps I just picked the wrong dishes.

Dessert really put a stake in the ground for me for this place though. I love souffle so I ordered their souffle. Everyone knows, no I scratch that, the STANDARD for souffle is that when it comes out, you poke a hole in the middle and pour the cream in.

I think my waiter was nervous, he came and grabbed the liquid, didn't poke a hole in the souffle at all, and just dumped the liquid all over the souffle and my plate literally making a mess and left.

The souffle, not having any time to air out, became soggy inside prematurely from itself and not from the liquid cream ...

It was disappointing. I expected this place to know better. I think it's a bit overpriced for the kind of food that you are getting and the skills. I do see potential though, so perhaps if they just refine their art a bit ...
