In the city of Famagusta, on the Turkish side of the island, the most impressive site to visit is the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque. From the outside, the mosque looks distinctly Catholic, and that's because it was once a grand cathedral. Look closer, however, and you'll spot the minaret built atop one of the church spires.
Once a cathedral, when the Turks came to occupy northern Cyprus, they turned this, and many other, churches into mosques. The best display of this is Lala Mustafa Pasha. During no prayer hours, women and men are permitted to enter without shoes or head coverings; just make sure you are dressed appropriately to enter a holy site.
