This hotel started out as an apartment building in the late 1920s, but has been a hotel for half a century now. Rooms are a bit dated, but functional. Can walk to many Chicago attractions from here. Ditka's steakhouse is attached...da bears!

The Tremont is a little worn around the edges, but still clean and comfortable. When I visited, the elevator was undergoing an upgrade, making all hotel guests have to use a back service elevator that, to be honest, didn't give off the best first impression. Upstairs, the rooms are decently sized with plush beds and bathrooms with marble countertops. Guests looking to book a stay of two weeks or longer can check out the Tremont's fully-furnished residences next door.

When a hotel is located around the block from a Bentley dealership, one can pretty much expect what they’re getting themselves into. The Tremont is vintage Chicago, boasting an uncluttered lobby that’s easy on the eyes, but doesn’t exactly douse its visitors in coziness. It’s a nice hotel, but my grandparents wouldn’t complain about it having too many frills.

Ditka’s is located next door, so guests yearning for some coach-certified chops or steaks won’t be disappointed. Shopping is readily available at nearby Oak Street and Michigan Avenue, making this one of the best hotels in town for those who’d like to shop until they drop—literally or figuratively. Nearby Rush Street also offers plenty of fine-dining options, as well as some worn-in bars where one can down a beer or three.

Although the lobby is really nice, The Tremont is showing its age. When I was there, the main elevator was being "modernized," so I had to take a tiny, rickety elevator up to the room. I would be lying if I said it wasn't a little scary. (I'm sure it's perfectly safe! But it made me think of ghost stories.)

The rooms are a little dark, but otherwise are okay. The beds are big, plush. Not much of a view from the room I was in, but perhaps this is better on other floors/sides? There's room service, which was nice to see. Gyros, burgers, pizza, that kind of thing. Staff was very friendly.

I absolutely loved the staff at this hotel. They were cracking jokes the moment I walked in and took the time to ask me questions and get to know me. Reginald and Jason were especially friendly and helpful.

The hotel itself is a bit on the older side, having been built in 1929. Considering its history, the lobby is in great shape and other visitors seemed pretty cozy snuggled up in the comfy chairs reading books by the fireplace on a chilly day in the city.

I wasn't impressed by the rooms as they definitely reflected their age and the tiny elevator made me feel a bit claustrophobic. I do have to say that they were pretty decently sized, but the decor could use some sprucing up.

The lobby of the Tremont is gorgeous, the rest of the place isn’t half bad either. Apparently the lobby is the same as it was in 1927 when the place was built; elegant, hardwood floors, a high ceiling. It’s beautiful. The rooms are modest. The Tremont had been an apartment building until fifty years ago, and it is prime real estate, being in the middle of what’s now Loyola’s downtown campus and right next to the Magnificent Mile. They’re more cozy than anything else, and there’s a definite historic vibe to the place. It feels like a step into the past, even though there is free Wi-Fi. Being next to the Magnificent Mile means that any kind of food or dining experience is within walking distance most hours, but the Tremont is enough off the beaten path that noise isn’t an issue.
