Great concept and another hit by chef Grant. More affordable than Alinea but not much less detailed and delicious. Love this place!!!

From the minds behind Chicago's only 3 Michelin-starred restaurant, Alinea, comes Next. The concept here is ever changing, with new menus introduced every three months (past menus include Paris 1909 and Childhood). Rather than making reservations, diners have to buy tickets beforehand, like they're going to a show (and actually, it kind of is one).

I've been lucky enough to have dined at Next for every menu they've had since literally day one. For travel addicts in search of novelty and all things delicious, there cannot be a better restaurant in the city of Chicago to go to. This restaurant is the second project of Chef Grant Achatz (of Alinea fame), and it changes its menu every 3-4 months or so mainly through the graceful execution of Chef Dave Beran. So far we have dined through Paris 1906, toured the cuisine of Thailand, relived Childhood, progressed through the years of El Bulli, felt at home in Sicily, and experienced the subtle beauty of an autumn in Kyoto. This year's menus will be more conceptual: The Hunt, a vegan menu, and Bocuse d'Or. For newbies, you can only purchase tickets online to dine here. To do so, register an account on nextrestaurant.com. Follow Next's Facebook page to be aware of when the next menu's tickets go on sale. Sometimes, they'll release more tickets on a whim as the menu progresses. There is only one or two tables they'll sell for a same-day reservation. All of these are announced on that Facebook page, so it helps if you pay attention to it! Refer to the FAQ on their website to determine whether or not they can accommodate the dietary restrictions you may have. Good luck on tickets, and happy eating!

The premise behind Next is very interesting! Every few months they re-vamp the entire menu. Getting tickets can be near impossible, but I have been lucky enough to purchase tickets a couple times. The first time (Paris) I was actually unable to go because I also got reservations at Alinea, which was AMAZING. A year later I returned for the much anticipated El Bulli Menu. I won't bore you with every dish, as I'm sure many people have already done this. I thought the overall meal was very good and we enjoyed the wine and cocktail pairings. Some dishes were definitely interesting. Some things weren't necessarily tasty. Everything was very Avant Garde, which is exactly what El Bulli is known for! Definitely a great experience. Especially since this is likely the last time anyone will be able to try these dishes.

If you get a chance you should also try check out The Aviary or The Office for after dinner cocktails. Both are very exclusive, especially the Office. So it's worth checking out. The Aviary has some very unique drinks if you are into all the Molecular Gastro stuff.

Overall it's a fun experience. The El Bulli menu was a bit pricey at about 475/person, but other menus are more affordable at about ~$85/person. The greater challenge is actually getting tickets.

FYI: If you follow them on Facebook they often offer same day tables, but those disappear quickly!
