My American visitors and I had enjoyed the Dublin - Kerry All Ireland semifinal at a north side pub, and they wanted to get some food and enjoy some music at the next stop. Oliver St John Gogarty's seemed like a good choice as I had previously found the music there to be pretty good and I knew they served food. Upon arriving, however, we did not get to experience other reviewers' descriptions of overpriced food and drink, and rude or clueless staff.

They would not let us in.

Middle-aged gents all, we probably would have dropped €200 in there within an hour. But the nearly non-verbal doorman had a problem with my Dublin shirt and pointed to a sign at the door that read "No Team Jerseys".

He would not let us in to a Dublin pub because I was wearing a Dublin shirt.

Many places have been described as tourist traps where they want to attract tourists and separate them from as much of their money as possible. Fair enough, but this place actively discriminates against locals. We checked in with other Templebar establishments and none of them had a similar policy.

This place raises obnoxiousness to a new level in Dublin. If you are looking for a truly Irish pub and music experience, go elsewhere. There are two family owned pubs in Templebar that will treat you right and appreciate your business. Oliver St John Gogarty's is not one of them. It is sickening, disgraceful, and not worthy of your custom.

Sure..... this is the "Fisherman's Wharf" of Dublin. It's highly touristy but heck, if you find yourself in Temple Bar you should pop your head in and see what's going on here. We did and throughly enjoyed a free bit of Trad music. You'll find a number of other pubs that might be more down to earth...but heck stop in and take a peek.

Definitely a fun spot to go to! It's right in the middle of the good stuff and there was live music when we were there too. Lost of cute drunken Irishmen too :)

For the Temple Bar area, this is actually a really large bar (it also houses a restaurant and hostel). I had the pleasure of seeing Tim Robbins perform here (it's a really small venue) and really have to recommend it to any bar-goer in Dublin. True, all bars in Dublin are relatively similar: they all serve beer, they all play music, and they all play up silly Irish cliches (especially in the Temple Bar area). They are, all, however, pretty fun. Gogarty's in particular, though, fosters a fun atmosphere while managing to sit firmly in the not-a-frat-party camp.

If you find yourself here on a night out in Dublin, order a Smithwicks at the bar and head upstairs. There's a large bronze horse in the corner that you can actually mount. Beer on a horse? What could go wrong?
