Karaköy is an up-and-coming neighborhood, formerly an industrial area that is rapidly gentrifying and becoming a hub for ultra-hip coffee shops, art galleries, and fancy restaurants tucked among its narrow, cozy, mostly car-free streets. On Sundays during warm weather the local cafes fill with people having their brunch outside, and the close configuration of the shops and stores even give the neighborhood an outdoor festival-like air. A great place to pick up fashion inspiration from the trendy people. Highlights include "Karabatak Cafe" for coffee, "Souq" as a unique artists bazaar/flea market, "Wom" and "Muhit" for lunch or brunch, and "Neuf" for a fancy dinner. Unfortunately, because this neighboorhood has become so popular in recent years, the prices of the local places have gone up a lot, so it's not the best place to get libations if you're on a budget. Just walking around and enjoying the atmosphere is free, however. :)

The latest hip and happening area in Istanbul just a short walk from this flat.

Great place to escape the cramped spaces of the European side. I enjoyed wandering around the markets and walking by the water. There's a more relaxed feeling with lots more families and groups of friends hanging out at night.

Named after Crimean Karaites, a Turkic tribe who accepted Judaism, Karaköy is the modern name of ancient Galata. It has long been a district known for the commercial activity it harboured which prohibited the emergence of residential areas. Especially in the 90s, Karaköy was among the list of places people were advised not to tread after nightfall. Many touristic guidebooks take pride in skipping this piece of information but the neighbourhood is home to Istanbul’s Red Light District, though the zone has none of the appeal or the touristic potential of the districts in European cities.

In the 2000s, Karaköy took steps towards becoming a popular spot, with the emergence of art galleries, clubs, coffee shops and pubs that attract foreigners as well as Turks. Nowadays, with Tophane fading out of the picture as a viable option for the next trendy in-city neighborhood, Karaköy is highlighted as the new it-district, without losing even a bit of its liveliness as a commercial nexus.

Still the busiest port in Istanbul, Karaköy hails sea passengers with a series of shops displaying the a wide selection of popular Turkish specialties: Namlı Gurme, the gourmet-deli concept bistro launched by Namlı; the Karaköy branch of Güllüoğlu offering a wide selection of Turkish pastry desserts and Koska, famous purveyor of the sesame paste halva.

Yet the buzz of Karaköy is never to limited to centres of touristic attraction. The district is home to Külah, one of the novel underground clubs with a commitment to host rather adventurous names, be them Turkish DJs or German post-rock bands; Nublu, the Istanbul branch of İlhan Erşahin’s famous New York new jazz club; Karabatak, one of Istanbul’s finest coffee-houses and Unter – an exquisite 'gastro-pub' and a member of the ever-elegant NuPeople family of enterprises.

Karakoy is the Beyoglu neighborhood on the north end of Galata Bridge. It is notable for the many ferry docks and the seafood restaurants lining the shores of the Golden Horn. The fin de siecle architecture notable for it's Ottoman-style columns and pediments dates back to when this was a major banking district. Karakoy is one of the best places to get a feel for Istanbul's more cosmopolitan past.

Karaköy, the modern name for the ancient Galata, is a commercial neighborhood in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, Turkey, located at the northern part of the Golden Horn mouth on the European side of Bosphorus.
Karaköy is one of the oldest and most historic districts of the city, and is today an important commercial center and transport hub. The location is connected with the surrounding neighborhoods through streets originating from Karaköy Square. The Galata Bridge links Karaköy to Eminönü in the southwest, Tersane Street to Azapkapı in the west, Voyvoda Street to Şişhane in the northwest, the steeply sloping Yüksek Kaldırım Street to Beyoğlu in the north, Kemeraltı Street and Necatibey Street to Tophane in the northeast.
The commercial quarter, which was originally the meeting place for banks and insurance companies in the 19th century, is today also home to mechanical, electrical, plumbing and electronic parts suppliers.

Karaköy, the modern name for the ancient Galata, is a commercial neighborhood in Beyoglu, at the northern end of the Galata Bridge. Grab a fish kebab, sit on a bench, watch the oil tankers sail up and down the Bosphorus, the commuters embark and disembark from the innumerable ferries at the nearby docks, and soak in the incredible LIFE and ENERGY of this extraordinary city.
