San Diego

There's a lot of little shops. I wasn't really intrigued by any of them. There are some Chinese restaurants throughout Chinatown. I haven't tried them yet, but they all seem to be open late, while the stores close pretty early.

Really crowded and hard to find parking but other then that they have great restaurants that serve delicious Asian cuisine. Chinatown also has stores you can purchase cheap merchants.

Los Angeles' historic Chinatown may not be as big as San Francisco's, but there are a lot of kitschy cool restaurants and stores to check out.

Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown.
Chinatown in Los Angeles isn't as large as New York or San Francisco's Chinatown. The new generation of Chinese immigrants have congregated in San Gabriel Valley and Chinatown LA is where the older generation lived. You can get lots of knock offs here and bargain the price down. Great place for cheap food as well.

Excellent place to walk around, near the tracks, right off 101 and Broadway. Many plazas n shops to get souvenirs, cheap t-shirts, all types of clothes, Asian styled clothes/sizes, shoes, electronic accessories, etc. So many food options!!! You really can't go wrong.

LA's Chinatown doesn't hold a candle to the OG San Francisco Chinatown, but it definitely holds its own. Lots of great restaurants and located right next to Echo Park and Silver Lake - the trendy, hipster cities of Los Angeles.

You can find everything here from little Chinese shops and grocery stores, to truly authentic cuisine. Definitely one of the better Chinatowns in the US - if you're near the downtown area, it's worth checking out!

Great place to walk around, shop and eat.
Great food at Ocean Seafood, 750 N. Hill 213-687-3088
They serve live seafood in tanks. If you are a fish lover, try the steamed
red rock cod with ginger and green onions.
Check their hours for dim sum which is very good. Sunday morning dim sum
is a treat. Get there about 11. If you get there too early, not all the dishes are being served yet.

The original Chinatown was razed in 1932, in the middle of the Great Depression, to make way for Union Station. A number of displaced Chinese families created a new Chinatown, located several blocks to the northwest. This "new" area continues to be a community focal point although no longer its prime focal point. Early Sunday mornings are a good time to see day-to-day life in this area although as a tourist attraction, regardless of the visitation time, it is nowhere close to the scope of San Francisco's Chinatown. To see Los Angeles's actual "Chinatown" without the tourist embellishments, visit Monterey Park and its environs.

Emeryville

There are some Chinatowns that are actually where Chinese people congregate, and there are others that are obviously catering to more tourists than locals. L.A.'s Chinatown is most definitely in the latter category. If you're expecting something as bustling and "real" as San Francisco's (which I admit is also a major tourist hub), you will be sorely disappointed. If you're only looking for cheap, typical Chinatown souvenirs, you'll find them here. However, for the best authentic Chinese food, head to the 626 - Rowland Heights, Arcadia, etc.
