Staff was Nice and could speak english. The breakfast is included and pretty Nice for an hostel. There was a lot of activities prepared and The rooms were clean. The bathrooms are shared with The whole hostel and they were ok clean.

What is so fabulous about this place is its element of surprise. The modest window display from the street doesn't provide an accurate glimpse of what awaits inside. Mad Hostel is a jewelbox of a guest house. Ultra clean for starters, it is exceptionally savvy in both its decor and style - actually depicting an animated Almodovar set. It is also extremely detail-oriented and focused on the guest-experience. For instance, when I arrived I simply wanted a little peaceful breathe of fresh air and a nice cold drink. The receptionist brought me up to the terrace where I happily enjoyed the view with my feet up. Other times, I fancied something more social and joined in one of the hostel's group activities: Salsa lessons. Situated in the center of Madrid, this is by far the best hostel for a budget traveler, no matter what your needs.

I'm a sucker for bright, vibrant colors, on anything: clothes, shoes, jewelry, handbags, duvet covers. I think for most people, bright colors elevate our moods and take us to our happy place---a sort of euphoria. This euphoria just so happens to coincide with the feeling most people have when they take vacation and leave their regular, everyday life behind. This is why I appreciated Mad Hostel from the onset, before even walking in the door. But when I did walk in the door and chatted briefly with the person at the front desk, I knew this would be a great choice for either a burgeoning traveler or a seasoned traveler that wants somewhere nice to say that is affordable at the same time.

And also, there are no ties in particular to African culture in Madrid but this hotel, in Lavapiés, is rather close to the both the grocery store and the hair supply store; In ten minutes at most you could walk there.

If you’re looking for a hostel but you’re a bit fussy about where you stay, then Mad Hostel is a great choice. It’s clean, in a fantastic location and surprisingly quiet too! When I arrived during the day there was hardly anyone about (it was siesta time!) so the guy at the reception desk was able to show me around and even take me up onto the rooftop terrace. It was a really nice day anyway, but the terrace was an incredible sun trap.
The rooms are spacious and clean, and they’ve got different sizes depending on your budget. Some are even en-suite twin rooms. There’s a bar downstairs with really cheap prices and they also organise bar crawls and different events too.
I love the quirky common areas! The décor and the furniture are really comfy and really encourage you to sit down and chill with the other guests.

Lavapiés is the perfect Madrid neighbourhood for a hostel. There are plenty of cool bars and cheap-eating joints, and the (other) tourists tend to hang a little to the north in Puerta del Sol (having said that, Puerta del Sol is only a ten minute walk away). Hostel was well organised and, though it sounds a bit pedantic, one of the things I noticed when I went up to the room was how clean the place smelled. They might have just done the daily clean, but it was a good sign (I’ve been in a few hostels that I don’t think had ever been cleaned). The communal bathrooms and showers were in good condition, not at all grotty. And the laundry is a blessing if you arrive in Madrid with a backpack stuffed with offensively smelling clothes. Oh, and if you’re heading back to the hostel late (after 2am) then check out La Candela - a flamenco bar just around the corner. It’s a famous late-late-night watering hole and flamenco stars often give impromptu concerts in the back room. A word of warning to the fitness freaks - I’d read somewhere there was a gym in the hostel. There is, and there isn’t. It’s got gear, but none of it works - welcome to the wonderful world of cheap accommodation. Go jogging instead.
