The Hamilton Hotel has long enjoyed both notoriety and a seedy reputation and looms large smack in the middle of Itaewon. The neighborhood itself, which has for decades been ostracized by locals as a dodgy hood, has undergone a renaissance in the last few years and cleaned up considerably, especially in the street behind the Hamilton Hotel, and Itaewon itself is now frequented on any day by a fascinating mix of locals and foreigners.

The hotel itself, however, continues to remain in the past with its marbled lobby floors, fluorescent lighting, and little signs of having undergone any sort of renovation- despite it surrounding neighborhood continuing to rise in popularity and reputation.

I wasn't allowed to see a room but the hotel lobby and facilities seemed exactly the same as when I went in for a bathroom break as a kid making it seem the Hamilton Hotel had no interest in keeping up with the times. The hotel is connected, like an interesting maze, to a few restaurants (Chinese, Korean barbecue), the enormous and popular lounge/club District building, and even with an underground accessories and fashion arcade.

The greatest draw the Hamilton Hotel has is its location in Itaewon which has become one of Seoul's hottest neighborhoods for its dining scene (especially the foreign restaurants), hip lounges, and extremely popular clubs. It's surrounded by some of Itaewon's hottest clubs at the moment (Mute, B One, etc) and the nightlife in the vicinity, especially on weekends, is a major rush. Those in the nightlife scene looking for the convenience of staying right in the heart of it will find it a perfect fit.

And yes, as previous reviewers have mentioned, both the sauna in the basement and rooftop swimming pool (only open in the summer) is known to be a popular cruising spot with the local gays although even the local gay population says both facilities have a rather seedy and unrefined reputation.

'You can actually stay in the Hamilton?' a friend asked me when I was talking about it, which sort of says it all. Of course, you can in fact stay in the Hamilton, but this is not what is is renowned for. It's well known amongst ex-pats as a place for the well-toned and well-muscled party animals of Seoul to come and flex their muscles by the pool as well as the sauna having a less celubrious reputation as a gay hook-up spot at night.

If you're up for a party, it's the place for you, but the dance music pumping out over the pool (which you can hear from the street belows) is my personal idea hell. It has the advantage of being in the centre of the main foreigner area Itaewon, so your super close to all the foreign restaurants and the nightlife. It's also LGBT friendly, which is rare in Korea and a definite plus. The rooms are dated but ok. I wouldn't go near it, but for some it's a hedonist Mecca I'm sure!

The Hamilton Hotel is an Itaewon institution: right in the middle of the action, completely conspicuous, and looming large over the often insane Itaewon party scene. I know that many families stay here because Itaewon during the day is a very interesting and diverse place, replete with restaurants and cafes and all the people watching you can manage in a lifetime. Young Koreans also hang out at this hotel, because it has a pool on the roof and is a perfect place to show off their buffed physiques. The gym in this hotel is pretty large for a Korean fitness center, and you can also experience a traditional Korean jimjilbang, or sauna, in the basement (although, I have also heard what the previous reviewer said: the sauna is 24 hours, and at night, it's a pick-up spot)...so maybe it's not always family friendly? At any rate, this is a great hotel for people who are slightly on the more adventurous side and want to see a wilder side of Korean culture and nightlife!

Slap on your suntan lotion and get ready to flex with the muscle-bound and bikini-clad of Seoul! If this sentence doesn't appeal to you, then the Hamilton Hotel may not be your cup of soju.
Found on the main party strip of Seoul's foreigner haven in Itaewon-dong, the Hamilton Hotel has two things going for it: location and a rooftop pool.
The hotel is surrounded by the greatest concentration of foreign restaurants to be found anywhere in Seoul. Thai, Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Mexican, Brazilian BBQ, Turkish, and dozens of fusion cuisine joints can be found only steps from the Hotel. The area is also known for it's nightlife, and evening time will find the streets buzzing with barhopping Koreans and foreigners alike.
It's proximity to the US Army Base means that most people in restaurants and bars in the area will be able to speak English, so it's a comfortable choice if you are nervous about trying to converse in Korean on your visit.
So, yeah. Location is good. Now let's talk about the pool.
The pool is not for relaxing. Open from 10am until 11pm, the rooftop pumps out dance music while drinks flow, beach balls fly, and bodies get brown. Most people are there to be seen in their bikinis or speedos, which is a rarity in the sunbathing-shy country of Korea where most people swim at the beaches fully dressed in t-shirts and shorts.
The rooms at the Hamilton are middle of the road. Nothing special but nothing offensive. They are clean, unadorned, and perfectly average. The service is good, and the staff have great English skills.
Bottom Line: If you're wanting a quiet, relaxing stay in Itaewon, you may wanna keep looking, but if you're visiting Seoul in the summer and looking for a place to grab some sunny, boozy, poolside fun in the middle of the city, the Hamilton may be just what you're looking for.

The Hamilton is located smack in the middle of Itaewon, Seoul’s foreigner “ghetto.” The hotel feels like a vestige of the 1970’s in both its style and maintenance: it’s a bit run-down and the décor is old-fashioned. The large fitness center feels like a glorified YMCA. The guest rooms, though clean, are furnished with mismatched pieces in mint green and dusty rose, making you feel as though you’re at grandma’s house rather than the epicenter of a hoppin’ expat neighborhood. What you’re paying for here is the location. Itaewon is an international business center, as well as the hub of international food and bars in the city. It’s definitely not where you go to experience “the real Korea.” In a country that’s still generally uncomfortable with homosexuality, the Hamilton is one of the more gay-friendly spots in the city. (Its sauna is actually notorious for being a gay hook-up spot.) Many of the visitors here never even sleep here – they come for the pool scene. And what a scene it is. The rooftop pool, open May to the end of August, feels like an Asian version of MTV’s “The Grind” – It’s where buff, young Koreans go to see and be seen. From 10:00am to 6:00pm, the music blasting from the pool area is so loud that it can be heard in the guest rooms situated on the pool-side of the hotel. People stay here for convenience or a party.
