Located in converted heritage buildings, don’t let the dated appearance of the façade fool you. The rooms within are modern and minimal, but have everything you would need. Though I felt that the lobby is smaller than that of typical hotels, as are the rooms, but the space is well utilized, with big comfortable beds and even a small dressing area. Two complimentary bottles of water are provided daily, with a hot water flask and powdered coffee available. Each room comes with a complimentary smartphone for guests to use to make local calls and surf the internet to look up information for free. You are encouraged to bring the phones out to use while exploring the city, but damaged or lost phones will be chargeable.

"Hipster chic" is especially in nowadays, and Hotel 1929 embodies the mod-vintage throwback with great aplomb. For starters it's located on the fringes of Chinatown, a short walk away from the cusp of trendy Tiong Bahru (where you can find kitschy independent bookstores, artisanal bread, and bespoke cocktails for the sophisticated and well-heeled), the perfect place to discover the city for yourself. The natural light, eccentric furnishings and friendly staff makes the hotel a cool, laid back spot. Extra points for freely offering soft drinks to guests, and inviting them to sample some old school Singapore edible paraphernalia like uniquely Singaporean popsicles (chendol, sweet corn and red bean are tradtional favorites) and sugar coated biscuits. The restaurant next door Ember piqued my curiosity and whet my appetite; I would definitely come back for that, along with the rooftop bathtub some terrace rooms offer and the complimentary smartphone (with free local calls and data) that you get to use during your stay if you book directly with the hotel.

If you want to experience one of Singapore’s heritage hotels without spending a small fortune, Hotel 1929 is a great choice. It’s on the outskirts of the Chinatown are and is in a big white heritage building that’s been converted into a boutique hotel. The rooms aren’t huge, but they're stylish and fit in all the modern comforts like an iPod dock, flatscreen TV, free WiFi, and a cute mini-cooler with free drinks. The lobby and the rooms have cool vintage chairs and you can see a poster with all them in the elevator. There isn’t a pool, but there is an outdoor patio area where they’ll offer you a Singapore-style popsicle. It’s a small hotel, so you’ll get really personalized service and the staff are young and happy to offer suggestions about what to see and where to eat.

Hotel 1929 has probably got to be one of the cooler hotels in town. Its design is a neat fusion of vintage furniture, heritage and modern, stylish technology. The hotel used to be a heritage building that has been converted. Rooms are simple but stylish and every room has a different vintage chair from a collection! (you can see the whole collection in a poster in the lift!) Toilets are also trendy and very clean with cute mosaic designs. Beds are comfortable and clean as well! Although rooms are a little small, they have everything you’ll need if you’re an IT Savvy person as they have a cute little mini-cooler with complimentary soft drinks, Ipod docks, flat screen television and free wifi! Although they do not have facilities like a pool or a gym, they do have a trendy outdoor lounge that serves traditional Potong ice cream (ice cream popsicles). Breakfast is also provided with the room charge and is available at their classy restaurant, Ember. Highly recommend this place for the experience!

This place is ok, but I wouldn't go out of my way to stay here again. If small rooms in a Chinese shophouse is your style, you will love it.
