Fantastic get a way for travellers of any age

This is my favorite kind of adventure. Peaceful, glorious surroundings, supporting the local communities and meeting the local people. The Lodge is private, safe, and peaceful. You have your own staff, spectacular freah homemade Thai meals and a chance to explore the local country side.

Highlight of our trip to IndoChina

Four of us stayed here for one night after a Luang Say boat trip upriver from Luang Prabang. I wish we had stayed longer here rather than going on to Chiang Rai (which holds few attractions). It was all a bit confusing at first when we arrived because most staff speak very little English. A man came and grabbed one of our bags and dashed off. We were told to follow him - which we did, carrying the rest of our suitcases, running down a long flight of steps and into a building which we assumed was the hotel reception but actually it was our own bamboo lodge. We didn't realise that the staff member was expecting to run back up the steps and fetch the rest of our bags! He pointed out two bedrooms. We were greeted by a young lady as well. We helped ourselves to the bedrooms. Fairly shortly after this the man in charge of the Lodge, who speaks excellent English, arrived and explained that this was our private residence and the young local man and woman were our own staff for our stay. They would serve our meals, get us drinks etc. The whole arrangement was really charming. Our dinner was served by them pretty soon afterwards, unfortunately rather cold by the time it had been carried down from the kitchen but very good quality. A group of Hmong and Lahu tribespeople performed a brief dance for us on our dining terrace also.
The next morning after breakfast a local guide arrived to take us for a walk around the Lahu and Hmong villages nearby, including the local school, and for an introduction to Batik. This was a really genuine experience - not a model village.
According to the programme given on the Luang Say website, we were expecting to be transferred to Chiang Rai at 3.30 but our car arrived at 1.30 so we left fairly soon after a very good lunch, again served by our house staff on our veranda. Shame. We would rather have stayed.
So, we could have done with a bit more information about what has happening when but we really enjoyed our brief stay. The bamboo lodges were surprisingly comfortable and peaceful and food was amazingly good, given the village location.
Beware that this place is not for the unfit - steep slopes and multiple steps inevitable.

Dear Jo,
Firstly, let me express my sincere gratitude for your kind words, for having been our guests at Lanjia Lodge and for taking the time to write this review, to which I happily reply.
Your arrival experience shows how important it is for the Manager, Khun Rangsan, to be on hand whenever guests come to check-in, since most of the local staff - all hill tribe people from the adjacent Hmong and Lahu hill tribe village - hardly speak any English. And believe me, this is already an improvement by 500% to the level we were when we started operating. I feel, however, that through the gracious personality and welcoming attitude, they are forgiven quickly.
The village visit and the brief class about making the local Hmong Batik are - indeed - genuine experiences and not scripted. We want our guests to immerse in the local culture and get to know the quality of life hill tribe people have (or have not).
I will look for opportunities to keep the food - which obviously was delicious - warm longer, so guests can really enjoy the true tastes and flavours of the Northern Thai cuisine.
Again, thank you for having been our guests, and I will work to improve the reading and information material we have and see if we can add more to make our guests stay even more meaningful .
With kind regards,
Sincerely yours,
Manfred ILG

rustic, but lovely experience

if you are looking for a fancy hotel, this is not the place to go. It is definitely rustic and can be little uncomfortable at times, but all the amenities are there (hot shower, flushing toilet, comfortable bed). It is located at a lovely part of the northern Thailand. The food is simply marvelous.

Dear vamsally,
Thank you for having been our guests at Lanjia Lodge. The Lodge - as you clearly stated - is not a luxury Lodge, but an ecolodge managed under the community-based tourism concept.
We strive to provide all the necessary facilities and ensure that they are in proper working condition and that the Lodge offers a clean and safe environment. More importantly, however, is that we aim to connect you - our guests - to the local community and provide you with a rewarding and satisfactory (learning) experience.
Thank you again and hope to see you back soon,
Sincerely yours,

Community lodge

Stayed just one night in this lodge, which is run to benefit the local hill tribe community.
We were the only people staying in our lodge (each of 4 lodges have 4 rooms), we loved the sense of peace and tranquility and enjoyed the fact that we were by ourselves. If you are seeking lots of entertainment then this is probably not the place for you to stay.
The food is brought to your own terrace and served by a host couple, who were attentive and eager to please, there was no choice at dinner , but they provided vegetarian food for me as requested and it was delicious. The room was basic, as to be expected but the bed was comfortable and had a mosquito net and there was instant hot water when needed for showering.
